Meet Leading Line’s Head of Finance, Felix Haag!
As Head of Finance Felix has the important job of creating and managing the trip’s budget as well as the budgets for both backup trips in the event that the Ottawa River is too dangerous to run in April. Felix works with each team member to determine how much money their department requires and makes sure that this fits within the current $3,600 grant given to the team by Algonquin College. Felix will also be keeping track of any expenses the team has during the trip and will be ensuring that the team isn’t incurring any extra costs that aren’t accounted for.
Felix has gone on a handful of canoe trips in the past but never as part of such a large group like the Leading Lines team. As a west coast local now going to school in Ontario he’s had the experience of paddling on trips in BC as well as on local routes such as the Madawaska River. His most notable trip lasted five days and connected a series of freshwater lakes along the Sayward Forest Canoe Route on Vancouver Island!

While the team won’t be sending any Class 5 rapids on this trip, Felix’s personal goals include becoming a more confident canoeist in swiftwater which will be in abundance on certain sections of the river, and as he lightheartedly put it, to “just get down river”! His group goals include making sure that team morale stays high during the trip and that everyone has a chance to have their opinions heard.
Felix grew up with a passion for the outdoors and after searching for direction he decided to try his hand at guiding and was drawn to the idea of whitewater paddling. As someone who spent his whole life in BC he also wanted to experience living somewhere new and Algonquin College’s Outdoor Adventure program (ODA) seemed like the perfect opportunity.
After graduating from the ODA program Felix aims to eventually return to BC though he’s uncertain as to when this could be. Before then he plans to work as an Ontario FireRanger over the summer helping to combat forest fires in both western and eastern Ontario.
